“Let’s Talk Based on a Theme”: An Elective Class to Improve Japanese Communication Skills

To efficiently enhance the Japanese language skills of a diverse student body, Toyo Language School offers elective classes across five domains and fifty topics. At the beginning of each semester, students select 3 topics in consultation with their “My Teacher,” based on their individual goals.

Among these, one elective class that showcases the unique features of Toyo Language School is “Let’s Talk Based on a Theme.”
In this class, local Japanese residents are invited as guests, and students practice conversation based on predetermined themes.
The class was developed with the belief that the desire to convey something fosters language acquisition. The goal is to motivate students both with pride in their own success, and satisfaction from learning to express something that they previously couldn’t.


During a class observation, cheerful conversations echoed down the hallway. The theme of the day was “What are you currently interested in?”
Chih-Ping from Taiwan joined the class with the goal of learning to naturally use the grammar from class in real conversations.
“At first, I was nervous speaking in front of native Japanese speakers. I didn’t know what to say and I was especially worried about making grammar mistakes. However, the guests kindly guided the conversation, which helped ease my worries. I used to be fixated on whether my grammar was correct, but once I learned that I could still be understood even with mistakes, I stopped worrying and began to enjoy the conversation more.”

Kezia from Indonesia shared that her goal was to gain confidence in communicating in Japanese.
“In the past, when I tried to speak with Japanese people, I was often met with confused expressions, which made me constantly worry whether my Japanese was understandable. In this class, I learned that communication requires more than just language skills—it’s also about the desire to convey your message, gestures, and body language. For example, since there are no honorifics in Indonesian, I learned to make a conscious effort to speak calmly and politely when talking to seniors (Indonesians tend to speak quickly!). I also started to avoid crossing my arms or legs and used polite verb forms. Thanks to these efforts, I made new Japanese friends and gained confidence in my communication skills!”


The local Japanese guests also shared their thoughts:
“It’s a great opportunity for us to learn why students became interested in Japan and what aspects of Japan they find appealing. It gives us a fresh perspective on our own country.”
“The students’ energy and enthusiasm, which we don’t usually encounter in our daily lives, is inspiring. I always look forward to hearing what they’ll talk about next.”

Teachers have observed clear growth in their students as well. At the end of each class, students reflect on what didn’t go well and discuss how to improve. In the following session, they regularly report success in the areas they had previously struggled with, showing that they are growing with each class. In regular classes outside of electives, these students have also become more proactive in communicating with others during group work—another sign of significant development.

The elective class “Let’s Talk Based on a Theme” greatly contributes to improving international students’ Japanese communication skills.
At Toyo Language School, we believe that Japanese language schools serve as hubs, fostering understanding and coexistence within the community. By involving local residents in our classes, we also aim to create opportunities for them to learn about Toyo Language School and our international students.



多様な学生の日本語力を効率よく伸ばすために、東洋言語学院では5つの領域、50項目から選べる選択授業を用意しています。学生たちは、学期が始まるカウンセリングで、マイティーチャーと一緒に目標に合わせて、毎学期3項目を選びます。

その中でも、東洋言語学院の特徴を活かした選択授業が「テーマを決めて話そう」。
地域に住む日本人をゲストとしてお招きし、決められたテーマに沿って会話を練習します。
この授業では、何かを伝えるために工夫することが言語習得を進めるという理論に基づき、「できた」という経験と「できない」から「できた」に変えるために工夫するという経験をしてもらいたいという想いから開講しました。

実際の授業を見学しにいくと、廊下まで響く談笑の声。この日のテーマは、「最近ハマっていること」でした。
台湾出身の何さんは、授業で習った文法を、会話の中で自然に使えるようになりたいという目的を持って、授業に参加していました。
「最初はネイティブの日本人を目の前にして緊張して、何を話したらいいかわからないし、文法が間違っていないか心配でしたが、その心配を解消できたのは、ゲストが親切に会話を誘導してくれたからです！文法が正しいかどうかにこだわっていたけど、間違っていたとしても話が通じた経験から、文法の間違いを心配しなくなり、リラックスして会話を楽しむことができるようになりました。」


インドネシア出身のKeziaさんは、日本語でのコミュニケーションに自信を持たせることが目標だと話してくれました。
「以前、日本人と話をしたときに、一生懸命伝えようとしていても日本人に「？」という表情や反応をされた経験が自分の中でずっと残っていて、自分の日本語を理解してもらえるかいつも心配していました。この授業で学んだことは、コミュニケーションに必要なのは、日本語の能力だけではなく、それを伝えたいと思う気持ち、ジェスチャーや姿勢も全てが大切なんだということ。たとえば、インドネシア語には敬語に当たるものがないため、目上の人と話をするこの授業では、静かに丁寧に落ち着いて話すこと（インドネシア人はいつも早口！）を意識して、話すときには足や腕を組まない、ます形を使って話すなど相手に理解されるためにできることを工夫しました。おかげで、新しい日本人の友達ができて、コミュにケーションに自信がつきました！」

ゲストとして参加してくれている地域の日本人の皆様も、
「学生たちが、なぜ日本に興味を持ったのか、日本の何が魅力的に映ったのか、などを知って、日本を新しい視点からみることができるいい機会になっています。」
「自分の普段の生活の中では感じられないエネルギーで向き合ってくれるから刺激になっているし、どんな話が聞けるだろうと毎回楽しみです。」
と笑顔で話してくださいました。

担当している教師にも、学生たちの成長が明確に見えています。
毎授業の最後の振り返りでは、うまくいかなかったことを出してもらい、みんなでどうすれば良かったかを考えます。それを活かし、次の回ではうまくできたという声があがることがほとんどで、学生が１回１回の授業で成長していることがわかります。選択授業以外の通常クラスでも、グループワークでは率先して相手の意見を聞くようになっていることも、大きな成長の一つです。

選択授業「テーマを決めて話そう」は、留学生の日本語でのコミュニケーションの上達に大きく貢献しています。
私たちは、日本語学校は地域の異文化理解・国際共生の発信地だと考えています。授業の中に地域の方々に入っていただくことによって、東洋言語学院と留学生を知っていただく機会にしたいという想いも同時に実現しています。
