Creating Connections: Student Staff Linking School and Neighborhood

At Toyo Language School, we have “Student Staff,” a group of students who work together with faculty to plan and run school events. They are reliable and enthusiastic members of our community, driven by a love for the school and a desire to create special memories through events.

This time, our Student Staff played an active role in a local festival: the Kasai “Shiki no Michi” & Shinden Area Festival. From selling popcorn at a food stall to leading campus tours, hosting multilingual language classes, and even offering Japanese teaching experiences, students took the lead in both planning and running the event. It was truly a student-powered project!

Edogawa Ward is home to about 700,000 people, but many still don’t know much about our school or our international students. With that in mind, our goal for this event was to help local residents gain a better understanding of Toyo Language School.

More than 60 students joined the Student Staff team.
In our first meeting, we had a discussion about how to introduce ourselves to the community. Led by a team of student leaders, we created “Five Promises for a Comfortable Guest Experience.” These student-made rules became the foundation of our preparations.


On the day of the festival, the food stall team aimed to sell out of popcorn, while the campus team set a goal of 100 visitors. Although many students were nervous at first, they gradually regained their confidence as they practiced their smiles and greetings. Soon, their natural energy and warmth began to shine.


The results?
118 visitors, 400 servings of popcorn sold out, and a huge success that exceeded last year’s achievements!
We received many kind comments in our guest survey, such as:
“I appreciated the thoughtful words about the steps.”
“The students were so positive and impressive.”
“What a bright and beautiful school!”

This event became a real-life opportunity for students to apply what they’ve learned in class and to build good relationships with Japanese. It was a meaningful experience that helped students grow, and the confidence they gained from organizing and running the event will surely stay with them moving forward.



東洋言語学院には、学内イベントを職員と一緒に作り上げる「学生スタッフ」がいます。
「学校が好き！」「イベントで特別な思い出を作りたい！」そんな思いを持った、頼もしい学生たちです。

今回はその学生スタッフが、地域のお祭り「葛西『四季の道』・新田地域ふれあいフェスティバル」で活躍しました！
模擬店でのポップコーン販売、校内ツアーや多言語教室、日本語教師体験など、学生が主役となって企画から運営までを担当。まさに“学生の手でつくるイベント”となりました。

江戸川区には約70万人が暮らしていますが、私たちの学校や留学生のことをまだ知らない方も多くいらっしゃいます。そこで今回は「地域の方々に東洋言語学院を正しく理解していただくこと」を目標に掲げました。
60名以上の学生スタッフが集まり、初回のミーティングでは「どうすれば地域の方に自分たちのことを知ってもらえるか？」を真剣に話し合いました。

リーダーチームを中心に「ゲストが気持ちよく過ごすための5つの約束事」を作り、自分たちで考えたルールを大切にしながら準備を進めていきました。


そして迎えた当日。
模擬店チームは「ポップコーン完売」、校内チームは「来校者100名」を目標にスタート！
最初は緊張していた学生たちも、笑顔の練習や声かけの確認を重ねるうちに、だんだんと本来の明るさを取り戻し、活き活きとした姿を見せてくれました。


結果は――
来校者数118名、ポップコーンは400食分を完売！昨年を大きく上回る成果となりました。
アンケートでは「段差を気遣う一言が嬉しかった」「学生さんが前向きで素晴らしい」「明るくて綺麗な学校ですね」など、温かいお声をたくさんいただきました。

このイベントは、授業で学んだ「人と良い関係を築く日本語」を実際に使う場にもなり、学生たちにとって大きな成長の機会となりました。
地域の皆さんとのつながりを感じながら、自分たちの力でイベントを成功させた経験は、きっとこれからの自信につながっていくはずです。
