Original Teaching Material, “CHANGE”:

Building a Strong Foundation for Using Japanese

Toyo Language School has developed original teaching materials for students who are beginning to study Japanese. This new material, called “CHANGE,” uses textbooks structured in a review format that allows students to set and achieve their own goals.

“CHANGE” is designed like a combination of a textbook and notebook. Not only do you read it for new information, but you also leave notes in the margins about your thoughts, impressions, acquired information, and new words as you study. By doing so, after three months of study, you will have a special portfolio that records your unique learning process.

Matthew shared his insights after 3 months of using “CHANGE,” filled with records of his learning journey: “Before coming to Japan, I focused on memorizing the meanings of words using flashcards. However, at TLS, I had many opportunities to practice using the words I had learned. The textbook provided many visually understandable hints, and I was excited to see whether each day’s class would start with speaking, listening, writing, grammar, or vocabulary. Not only did I improve my Japanese skills, but I also improved my ability to understand others through tasks like interviewing classmates! Group work and pair work helped me develop the ability to think and try things out on my own. As someone who started studying Japanese seriously for the first time, it was challenging, but I also developed the habit of listening carefully to the teacher to keep up with the lessons.”

New student Claudia shared her memories from before enrolling and how they connect to her current study achievements: ‘The scenes used in “CHANGE” are not fictional, so I can relate them to my daily life. It makes it easier to see practice during class as something personal, allowing me to enjoy studying while staying motivated. Actually, before I started studying, I lost my bag… At that time, I had a friend who could speak Japanese come with me to the police box. Coincidentally, we practiced a scene in class where we were asked questions by the police. Now, I feel confident that I could communicate at the police box by myself. I wish I had known this sooner!'”

学びの記録がぎっしりと詰まった「CHANGE」を手に、3か月間で気づいたことを教えてくれたのは、Matthewさん。
『日本に来る前は、フラッシュカードを使って単語の意味を覚えることに集中していました。でも、TLSでは、これまで覚えた単語を「どう使うか」を練習するチャンスがたくさんありました。教科書には目で見て理解しやすいヒントがたくさんあって、毎日の授業が話す、聞く、書く、文法・語彙のどれから始まるのかとワクワクしていました。
日本語の力を伸ばせたことはもちろんですが、クラスメイトにインタビューをするタスクで、相手を理解する力も伸ばせました！グループワークやペアワークでは、自分たちで考えて試す力も身につけました。初めて本格的に日本語の勉強を始めた私にとってはチャレンジングでしたが、授業についていくために、先生の話していることを逃さず注意深く話を聞く習慣も身につけました。』

新入生のClaudiaさんは、入学前に遭遇した思い出と今の勉強の成果を紐づけて話してくれました。
『「CHANGE」に使われているシーンがフィクションではないから、普段の生活と結び付けることができます。授業中の練習も自分のこととしてとらえやすく、モチベーションを上げながら勉強を楽しむことができています。
実は、勉強を始める前に、カバンをなくしたことがあって。。。その時には、日本語が話せる友達に交番についてきてもらいました。ちょうど、授業で警察の人に質問をされたシーンを練習することがありました。今ならひとりでも交番でコミュニケーションがとれる自信があります。もっと早く知りたかった！』
