Problem-Solving Skills in the Final Test: Graduation Ceremony

On March 24, Toyo Language school held a graduation ceremony and invited students to bring writing utensils and attend in casual attire. Upon gathering for the ceremony, students were presented with a program with the words “Final Test” written on it. Surprise and reluctance rang out from the students who had only just finished their tests.

The task for the final test was not only to answer the questions given, but to do so “using any method.” Students were free to seek out friends, teachers, and even the internet in order to find the answers to this test. so, the students began to discuss, consult, and research vigorously in search of the answers to this final test.

This final test was meant to reflect the core teaching philosophy of Toyo Language School. Each individual, with their unique strengths, weaknesses, likes, and dislikes, and the world is full of diverse problems with many solutions.  We encourage students to tackle problems using their own methods because we believe that this ability to employ various strategies to solve problems is essential for thriving in the world. On the day of the entrance ceremony, we were proud to see the students putting this into practice.

The ceremony concluded with an encouraging speech from the principal and a traditional Japanese shakuhachi performance to celebrate the graduates’ new beginnings. We will continue to support our graduates in their new endeavors. Congratulations on your graduation!

3月24日、東洋言語学院では卒業式が行われました。
服装は自由、筆記用具を持ってきて！と言われて集まった学生たち。
受付で受け取った式次第には「最後のテスト」の文字が。

学生たちからは「ええ〜、なんで？！」「もういいよー！」という声が上がりますが、配られたテストを見てみると…
なんだか見覚えのある写真や言葉が穴抜きに。

最後のテストの課題は、
『ここに書かれた質問の答えを探すこと。どんな方法を使ってもいいです。』

友達に聞いてもいいし、先生にヒントをもらってもいい。実際にその場に見に行ってもいい。
もしかしたらインターネットに書いてあるかもしれない。
学生たちは他のクラスに聞きに行ったり、色々な方法を考えて答えを探し出しました。

これは、東洋言語学院の授業で学生にずっと伝え続けていることです。
世の中にはいろいろな問題があって、問題を解決するにはいろいろな方法があります。
苦手なこと、得意なこと、好きなこと、嫌いなこと、一人一人とても個性的な私たちが、自分のやり方を駆使して、問題解決に挑むこと。
これからの世界で活躍していくために、それこそが必要なことだと考えています。
様々な方法を駆使して問題に挑む卒業生は、東洋言語学院のそんな願いを見事に体現してくれました。

最後に校長先生から激励のお言葉と、日本の伝統的な虚無僧尺八の演奏をいただきました。
卒業生の新たな門出を祝う素敵なプレゼントになりました。
