Graduate Interview – “Humans Are Not Robots” – Lessons Learned from Studying in Japan

Recently, one of our graduates, Big, came back to visit TLS!
After graduating from TLS, he went on to study café business at a Professional Training College. Upon returning to Thailand, he worked as a barista and even won the Latte Art Championship in 2016!
Today, he is active in three roles: a blogger introducing Japan, a photographer, and a tour guide bringing Thai visitors to explore Japan’s famous spots.
We asked Big to reflect on what he discovered through his study abroad experience in Japan.

Q. How has your experience at TLS helped in your current work?**
A. First of all, when I go out to interview locals for my blog, I can now have deep, meaningful conversations with them.
For example, when I covered the Tōhoku Region’s three major festivals, I was able to hear about the people’s emotions and the cultural background behind each festival.
If I hadn’t studied Japanese, I probably would’ve just thought, “Oh, the festival is fun,” and missed the deeper meaning behind it.”

Q. Aside from your Japanese skills, in what other ways did you grow at TLS?
A.When I first started studying abroad, I couldn’t keep up with the lessons and even cried in the bathroom sometimes (sweat).
But since Japanese was the only way to communicate, I pushed myself to make lots of friends and practice speaking.
I developed the strength to take on challenges with a positive mindset: “I have no choice but to do it!” That mindset became one of my greatest takeaways.”


Q. What are your goals or dreams for the future?
A.For now, I want to increase potential customers through my blog and grow my tour guide business.
I’ve decided to retire in four years, and after that, I want to open a small café in my hometown, about a 5-hour drive from Bangkok, and live a peaceful life.
I hope it will become a cozy place where friends and locals can gather and share stories about their travels.
While my current work is also a way to fund that dream, I’m truly enjoying what I do!”

Q. Do you have a message for current TLS students?**
A.While you’re in Japan, make the most of it by traveling around the country.
Experience things you’ve never seen or heard before.
Encounter new things, feel new emotions, and enjoy those feelings.
Doing so will help you fall more in love with Japan and give you more motivation to improve your Japanese.
Humans are not robots.
We grow by feeling happiness, enjoying delicious food, and having fun. That emotional richness will deepen your heart.
At first, I used to feel embarrassed about my weaknesses, but I realized that hiding them didn’t help me grow.
What’s important is not hiding your weaknesses, but trying new things, no matter what. That’s how we improve!

Starting from N5 level at TLS, Big has become someone who now shares his love for Japan with the world.
He’s a living example of how studying abroad isn’t just about learning a language — and we were so happy he came back to show us that in person!

先日、卒業生のBigさんがTLSに顔を見せに来てくれました！TLSを卒業した後は専門学校でカフェビジネスを勉強し、タイに帰国後はバリスタとして活躍。なんとラテアートの選手権で2016年にはチャンピオンになったそうです！！そして現在は日本の紹介をテーマとしたブロガー、写真家、タイのお客様を日本に連れてきて観光名所を案内するツアーガイドと、3つの活動を行っているとのこと。そんなBigさんが振り返る、日本留学で気づいたこととは？

Q．TLSでの経験は、今の活動にどう役立っていますか？
A．第一に、ブログの取材のために現地の人に話を聞きに行ったときに、その人たちの深い想いまで聞けるコミュニケーションが取れるようになりました。例えば、東北3大祭りの取材に行ったときには、現地の人々が「どんな背景で」「どんな気持ちで」お祭りに携わっているのか、話を聞くことができました。もし日本語を勉強していなかったら、ただ「お祭りは楽しい」というだけで終わってしまっていたと思います。

Q．TLSで、日本語能力以外に成長できたところは？
A．留学して最初のクラスは、ついていくことができなくてトイレで泣くこともありました（汗）でも、コミュニケーションの方法が日本語しかないので、とにかくたくさん友達を作って練習しよう！やるしかない！と前向きにチャレンジする力が養われました。


Q．今後の目標や夢はありますか？
A．まず、ブログで見込み顧客を増やしてツアーガイドのお客さんを増やしたいです。仕事はあと4年で引退すると決めていて、引退後はバンコクから車で5時間の地元で小さなカフェを開業して、静かに暮らしたいと思っています。友達や地元の知り合いが集まって、みんなでお互いの旅行の経験談を交換するような憩いの場を作りたいです。今の仕事も、その資金調達として捉えていますが、楽しくやっています！

Q．在校生へのメッセージをどうぞ！
A．日本にいるうちに、国内旅行を楽しんでください。見たことないこと、知らないことを経験して、新しいものに触れて、新しい感情を楽しむ。そうすると、日本のことがもっと好きになって、日本語の力をつけるモチベーションにもなるはずです。人間はロボットではない。「幸せだな」「おいしいな」「楽しいな」と様々な感情を得て、自分の心を豊かにしてください。 私も最初は、自分の弱いところは恥ずかしいと思っていたけれど、それを隠し続けていたら何も成長しないと気づきました。弱さを隠すのではなく、とにかくいろいろなことをやってみるのが大切だと思いますよ！
