Risshun (First Day of Spring)

Risshun (First Day of Spring)

Last Saturday, 4 February, was “Risshun”.
“Risshun” is the day when spring begins on the calendar.
The weather is still cold, but it will gradually get warmer from now on.

What do you think of when you hear the word ‘spring’?
There are many different answers depending on the country or culture.
Surely that most Japanese people think of cherry blossoms and hanami (cherry blossom viewing).
Nowadays, hanami is often associated with cherry blossoms, but originally, people used to view cherry blossoms with plum blossoms.
In Tokyo, plum blossoms are at their best from early February to mid-March.
There are various kinds of plums, and there are more than 300 kinds, such as those with white flowers and those with pink flowers.

In addition to plum blossoms, there are a surprisingly large number of other flowers in bloom at this time of year.
When you go out, you should all try to look for the little signs of spring!
