Japanese dining manners

Japanese dining manners

Are you confident in your knowledge of Japanese dining manners?
Dining manners differs from country to country.
Today’s topic is about typical Japanese dining manners.

(1) Say “Itadakimasu” before eating and “Gochisosama” after eating.
These are important words to express gratitude to the person who prepared the meal and to animals and plants.
(2) Warm noodles and soups in Japanese cuisine should be eaten and drunk with
a lot of noise.
This is not a rule that must be followed, but it is an action to prevent burns and to enjoy the aroma.
This is completely opposite to the etiquette of Western food.
(3) Japanese food is eaten by holding the bowl.
Japanese people have been eating sitting on tatami mats for a long time, to keep the distance between food and mouth by using the bowl.
(4) For Japanese food with warm soup, put your mouth on the bowl and drink it.
This is done to drink cleanly without spilling.
(5) Do not eat with your mouth wide open.
It is said that it is not good to see the inside of your mouth or make chewing sounds while eating.

It’s interesting to see how different Japanese manners are from other countries.
