Toward a School Loved by the Community! Students Take the Lead at the 36th Kasai “Shiki no Michi” and Shinden Area Festival

On May 24, the 36th Kasai “Shiki no Michi” and Shinden Area Festival, one of the largest community events in the region, was held. This year as well, many students and staff spent considerable time preparing and took part in the festival.
In this article, we will share an interview with the staff member who planned and supervised the event, along with comments from the student staff members who actually took part in it.


First, we asked a Toyo Language School staff member about the purpose of participating in the festival and their thoughts on the event.


■ Becoming a School That the Local Community Understands and Is Glad to Have Nearby

－What kind of event is the 36th Kasai “Shiki no Michi” and Shinden Area Festival?
[Staff]: It’s a very diverse festival and one of the largest events in the local community. School PTA members, local children, and many others take part by running booths and giving performances.

－What is the purpose of participating in this event?
[Staff]: Toyo Language School is a school that exists within this community. That’s why we participate—to help local residents learn about the school accurately and gain a better understanding of who we are.
After all, if there’s a school in your neighborhood that you’ve never seen before and don’t really know anything about, it can naturally make people feel a little uneasy or even intimidated. That’s why we want this event to give people a chance to see what goes on inside the school and to learn that foreign students like these are studying hard in Japan.
Ultimately, our goal is for local residents to feel, “We’re glad that Toyo Language School is part of this community.” That is the purpose behind our participation.

■ Students’ Remarkable Growth Behind the Scenes of a New Initiative

— Was there anything that particularly stood out to you during the preparation period?
[Staff]: As part of our preparations, we practiced handing out flyers, and it was truly impressive! Every year, the staff usually teach everyone how to do it and then we all practice together. This year, however, we first selected a team of student leaders. We trained those leaders first, and then had them teach the other students.
It turned out to be exactly the right approach. More than ever before, the students took the initiative and participated actively. What left the strongest impression on me was seeing one of the student leaders stand in front of the group and enthusiastically teach the others using English and their native language, as well as seeing everyone work together and practice as a team.

－I understand you held meetings and practice sessions several times over the course of a month. How was the event itself?
[Staff]: The students worked really hard handing out flyers on the day of the event as well! They decorated the area in front of the school beautifully, and everyone danced together while clearly enjoying themselves.
Over the course of a month, we held meetings and practice sessions three or four times, so I think they were able to fully demonstrate the results of all their hard work.


■ Students Reflect on Challenging Their Abilities and the Joy of Coming Together as One

Next, we asked three questions to the student staff members who helped run the festival.

－What made you decide to participate in this event?
[Student Staff]: Since I attend a Japanese language school, most of the people around me are fellow international students. So I wanted to take this opportunity to interact with local residents and see how well my Japanese skills would hold up in real-life situations.

－And after putting them to the test, how did it go?
[Student Staff]: Lots of young children came to our booth, and I think it went pretty well overall! (laughs)

－You helped with the preparations from the very beginning. Is there anything that particularly stands out in your memory?
[Student Staff]: The thing that left the biggest impression on me was teamwork. What really stayed with me was the feeling of people from many different countries coming together as one team. During the preparations for the festival, everyone took responsibility for their own role and worked hard to do their part. Seeing that was truly inspiring.
At school, we also held simulation practices three or four times, taking turns playing the roles of visitors and staff members. I was very nervous at first, but little by little I became more comfortable. In the end, I found myself thinking, “I’m really glad I decided to participate.”

－Is there anything you learned from this experience that you’d like to apply in the future?
[Student Staff]: The two biggest things I learned were teamwork and Japanese.
I realized that there’s actually a gap between the Japanese we learn in class and the everyday Japanese used by local people in their daily lives. It made me feel strongly that I need to continue improving both my academic Japanese and the Japanese that’s used in real-world situations.

－That’s a wonderful insight. We hope you’ll help us again if another opportunity comes up.
[Student Staff]: Yes, you can count on me!


■ Toyo Language School: Continuing to Grow Together with the Community

The 36th Kasai “Shiki no Michi” and Shinden Area Festival was the culmination of everyone’s united efforts leading up to the main event. Although the weather was a little chilly and there were moments when rain seemed possible, the students’ infectious smiles and enthusiasm helped make the festival a great success.
The students, who were initially nervous, seemed to gain confidence in their Japanese language skills and to receive a great deal of warmth as they interacted with local residents and exchanged smiles.
Toyo Language School will continue striving to be a school that grows and moves forward together with the people of the community. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all the local residents who came to the festival and supported the event.


5月24日、東洋言語学院も毎年参加をしている地域最大級のビッグイベント「第36回葛西「四季の道」・新田地域ふれあいフェスティバル」が開催されました！今年も、多くの学生とスタッフがこの日のために準備を重ねて参加しました。
今回は、イベントを企画・引率した職員へのインタビューと、実際に参加した学生スタッフの生の声を合わせてお届けします！

まずは、東洋言語学院の職員に、このイベントに参加する「目的」や「イベントへの想い」を聞きました。

■ 地域の方に正しく知ってもらい、「ここにあってよかった」と思われる学校へ

ーー第36回葛西「四季の道」・新田地域ふれあいフェスティバルとは、どんなイベントですか？
【スタッフ】：学校のPTAの方だったり、子どもたちももちろん出店したり出演したりしている、すごく多彩で、地域の中でもとても大きなお祭りです。

ーーイベントに参加する目的は何ですか？
【スタッフ】：私たち東洋言語学院は、この地域の中にある学校です。だからこそ、地域の方々に学校のことを正しく知ってもらい、理解していただくために参加しています。やっぱり、近所に見たことのない、中がよくわからない学校があるのって、少し不安だったり怖いと感じたりすることもあると思うんですよね。だからこそ、イベントを通じて学校の中のことを知ってもらい、『こういう外国人の学生たちが、日本で一生懸命勉強しているんだな』ということを知ってほしくて。最終的には『この地域に東洋言語学院があってよかったな』と思ってもらうこと。それを目的に参加しています。


■ 新しい試みの舞台裏で見られた、学生たちの頼もしい成長

ーー今回の準備期間で、特に印象に残っていることはありますか？
【スタッフ】：事前の準備としてチラシ配りの練習をしたのですが、これが本当にすごくて！毎年だいたい私たち職員がやり方を教えてみんなで練習するのですが、今年は『学生のリーダーチーム』を先に決めました。まずそのリーダーたちにレクチャーをして、彼らから他の学生に教えるという方法をとったんです。
これが大正解で、今までで一番、学生たちが主体的に、積極的に参加してくれました。1人の学生リーダーがみんなの前に立って、英語や自分の母国語を交えながら一生懸命教えている姿、そして全員で一丸となって練習している姿が、私は何よりも印象に残っています。

ーー1か月かけて何度もミーティングや練習を重ねたそうですね。当日の様子はいかがでしたか？
【スタッフ】：当日もビラ配りをかなり頑張っていました！学校の前を華やかに飾り付けして、みんなで楽しそうに踊ったり。1ヶ月間で3〜4回はミーティングや練習を重ねてきたので、その成果が100%出せていたんじゃないかと思います。

■ 参加した学生が感じた「自分の実力への挑戦」と「一つになる感動」

続いて、実際にフェスティバルの運営に関わった学生スタッフにも、3つの質問を投げかけてみました。


ーーこのイベントに参加しようと思った理由は何ですか？
【学生スタッフ】：私は今、日本語学校に通っているので、周りはみんな外国人（留学生）です。だから、地域の方々と触れ合う中で『自分の日本語の実力が今どれくらい通用するのか』を試してみたいと思って参加しました。

ーー実際に試してみて、結果はいかがでしたか？
【学生スタッフ】：小さい子どもたちもたくさん来てくれましたし、結果はまぁうまくいったかなと思っています！（笑）

ーー今回は準備の段階から色々と手伝ってもらいましたが、何か印象に残っていることはありますか？
【学生スタッフ】：一番印象に残っているのは『チームワーク』です。さまざまな国から来た外国人たちが、みんなで一つになる感じがすごく心に残っています。特にフェスティバルの準備をする時、それぞれが自分の役割を責任持って、一生懸命に頑張って進めている姿が本当に素晴らしかったです。
学校でも3〜4回くらい、お客さん役とスタッフ役に分かれてシミュレーションの練習をしました。最初はすごく緊張したけれど、だんだん慣れていって、最後は『あぁ、参加して本当によかったな』と思いました。

ーーこのイベントに参加して学んだことや、これからに活かしたいことは何かありますか？
【学生スタッフ】：学んだことは、やっぱり『チームワーク』と『日本語』です。
学校の授業で学ぶ（アカデミックな）日本語と、地域の方が普段使っている日常の日本語には、ちょっと『差』があるんだなと気づきました。アカデミックな日本語も、リアルな生活で使う日本語も、もっとちゃんと学ばないといけないなと強く感じました。

ーー素晴らしい気づきですね。また機会があったらぜひ手伝ってください。よろしくお願いします！
【学生スタッフ】：はい、お任せください！

■ これからも地域と共に歩む東洋言語学院

本番に向けて一丸となって進んできた今回の第36回葛西「四季の道」・新田地域ふれあいフェスティバル。当日は少し肌寒く、雨を心配する場面もありましたが、学生たちの弾けるような笑顔と熱気で、イベントを大いに盛り上げることができました。
最初は緊張していた学生たちも、地域の方々と触れ合い、笑顔を交わす中で、自身の日本語への自信と、たくさんの温もりを受け取ったようです。
