What is Reasonable Accommodation? Creating a Supportive Learning Environment for International Students

For international students studying in a foreign land, overcoming “barriers” to learning is a vital challenge. At our school, we place great importance on “Reasonable Accommodation.” This refers to the adjustments and support we provide to ensure that all students—regardless of any disabilities or physical and mental conditions—have an equal opportunity to learn and grow. We believe our role is to create an environment where students, who are bravely challenging themselves across language and cultural barriers, can reach their full potential.

We work closely with each student to understand their individual needs and provide practical support. For example, we ensure accessible pathways within classrooms for wheelchair users, and provide enlarged test materials for students who require visual assistance. We also offer flexible arrangements, such as allowing students to take exams in a separate, quiet room if personal circumstances require a more focused environment. These accommodations are shared among all faculty and staff to ensure a school-wide support system.

慣れない異国の地で学ぶ留学生にとって、学習を妨げる「バリア」をどう取り除くかは非常に重要な課題です。そこで本校が大切にしているのが「合理的配慮」です。これは、障がいの有無や心身の状態にかかわらず、すべての学生が等しく学び、成長できるよう、個々の状況に合わせて学校側が調整や支援を行う取り組みを指します。言葉や文化の壁を越えて挑戦する学生たちが、持てる力を最大限に発揮できる環境づくりこそが、私たちの役割です。

本校では、学生一人ひとりのニーズに寄り添い、具体的なサポートを実践しています。例えば、車いすを利用する学生が安心して学べるよう教室内の動線を確保したり、視覚的な配慮が必要な学生にはテストの問題用紙の文字を大きく調整して配布したりしています。また、特別な事情がある場合には、周囲を気にせず集中できる別室での受験を許可するなど、柔軟な対応を行っています。これらの配慮は教職員間で共有され、学校全体で学生を支える体制を整えています。
