地域からの要望に応え実現した日本人との交流の場「土曜カフェ」
The “Saturday Cafe” is a place for interaction with Japanese people, established in response to requests from the local community
One of the key features of Toyo Language School is its location. Edogawa Ward, located on the eastern side of Tokyo, has the largest park area among the 23 wards. Additionally, the Kasai area is a residential town, where many people live. This means that while students study and learn in school, they also have opportunities to interact with residents in the community.
TLS also hosts the “Saturday Cafe” – an event started with the help of Edogawa Sogo Jinsei University where students can interact with local residents. This event allows Edogawa Sogo Jinsei University students to interact with international students, while also providing a cultural exchange for TLS students and an opportunity to communicate with Japanese people.
The “Saturday Cafe” is divided into two parts. In the first half, participants from Edogawa Sogo Jinsei University present slides they have prepared, introducing Japan’s seasonal traditions and culture, as well as upcoming events in Edogawa Ward. In the second half, attendees break into smaller groups to discuss the traditional cultures and events from their respective hometowns.
Students who participated shared their thoughts, saying things such as:
“I’ve been able to deepen my understanding of Japanese traditional culture, and it’s also a great opportunity to practice my Japanese.”
“Even though my Japanese wasn’t perfect, they listened patiently, so I was able to focus on communicating effectively.”
Likewise, participants from Edogawa Sogo Jinsei University always leave with smiles on their faces after each event.
These events where students can practice Japanese and challenge themselves in communicating with Japanese people is possible thanks to the trust built within the local community, and is an opportunity unique to Toyo Language School.
東洋言語学院の特徴のひとつ、立地。東洋言語学院がある江戸川区は東京都の東側に位置し、23区内で一番公園面積が広い区です。さらに、葛西エリアはベッドタウンと呼ばれ、人々が生活をする街です。学生たちは、学校の先生だけでなく、地域の方々からも多くの学びを得ています。
地域の方との交流を通して学べるのが「土曜カフェ」です。江戸川総合人生大学のみなさんが東洋言語学院に来校されて行われる交流会である土曜カフェは、江戸川総合人生大学の【留学生との交流の場を持ちたい】という希望と、留学生の【日本人とコミュニケーションをとりたい】という希望が実現した機会です。
土曜カフェは２部編成となっていて、前半は江戸川総合人生大学の方がご用意くださったスライドを見ながら、四季折々の日本文化を紹介していただいたり、近日中に予定されている江戸川区の行事を案内していただきます。 後半では、いくつかのグループに分かれて、それぞれの出身地での伝統文化や行事について会話をします。
参加した学生たちからは、
「日本の伝統文化についてもより深く理解できるし、日本語を練習する良い機会にもなっています」
「日本語の力が十分でなくても、辛抱強く話をきいてくれるので、一生懸命コミュニケーションをとりました」
といった声が届いています。
江戸川総合人生大学のみなさんも、イベント後は毎回笑顔でお帰りいただいています。
教室のなかに留まらず、日本語を練習し、日本人とのコミュニケーションに挑戦する機会があることは、地域から得た信頼があってこそ。
