地域と交流、相互理解を深める「新田地域ふれあいフェスティバル」
“Shinden Area Fureai Festival” deepens mutual understanding with the local community
On May 26th, the “Kasai ‘Path of the Four Seasons’ Shinden Area Fureai Festival” sponsored by Edogawa Ward, Tokyo, was held at Shinden No. 6 Park, right next to the main building of Toyo Language School. A total of 70 staff members and students participated, interacting with local people in various ways throughout the event.
When participating this time, we decided on two objectives. To encourage the local people’s proper understanding of international students and to give students the opportunity to learn about the culture of the local area and interact with its residents. On the morning of the event, the executive committee members confirmed their objectives and decided it would be important to communicate with a smile.”
The students of the executive committee were divided into three teams: one for running a refreshment booth at the venue, one in charge of school tours, and another for teaching their own languages (Italian, Hindi, Telugu, Korean, Swedish, Spanish, Thai, Chinese, Turkish, and English). Before the event, they met and practiced many times between classes.
The day before the festival, they cleaned and decorated every corner of the school. Edogawa Ward is home to about 690,000 people, but it’s a commuter town where fewer people are around during the weekdays.
Because this event was held on a Sunday afternoon, it was attended by many families who the students do not usually encounter. In a different environment than usual, the students were nervous, but they were able to communicate in Japanese, interact with locals, and gain a valuable experience.
Many guests came to the refreshment booth and the school events, making the day a great success! Even though the students were nervous during the morning meeting, using their own “smiles” and “greetings,” they saw it through to the end.
We received comments from residents such as, “Has it really only been three months since you came to Japan?” and “I had no idea there were students from over 40 countries,” making us feel closer to the local community. We will continue striving to be a Japanese language school that is trusted by the local community, so that people will say, “We’re glad Toyo Language School is here!”
5月26日、江戸川区主催の「葛西『四季の道』・新田地域ふれあいフェスティバル」が、学校のすぐそば、新田六号公園で開催されました！東洋言語学院からは職員・学生総員70名が参加、イベントを通じて地域の方々との様々な交流ができました。
今回参加するにあたり、2つの目標を設定しました。地域の皆さんに留学生について正しく理解してもらうことと、学生たちにこの地域の文化や人々と触れ合う機会を提供することです。当日の朝、実行委員の学生たちと改めて目標を確認、笑顔でのコミュニケーションを大切にすることを決めました。
実行委員の学生たちは、模擬店でのドリンク販売、学内ツアー、そして10種類の言語教室（イタリア語、ヒンディー語、テルグ語、韓国語、スウェーデン語、スペイン語、タイ語、中国語、トルコ語、英語）の3つのチームに分かれ、授業の合間に何度もミーティングや練習を重ねました。
前日には、学内を隅々まで清掃し、飾りつけを行いました。江戸川区には約69万人が住んでいますが、ベッドタウンのため、平日の昼間は人が少なくなります。
ただ、日曜日の昼間に行われたこのイベントには、普段接することの少ない家族連れが多く参加しました。いつもと違う環境で、地域の方々との交流、学生たちは緊張しながらも日本語でコミュニケーションを取り、貴重な経験を積むことができました。
模擬店や校内イベントには多くのゲストが訪れ、大盛況！
朝のミーティングでは緊張していた学生たちも、自分たちで考えた「笑顔」と「あいさつ」を最後までやりきりました。
地域の方々からは「本当に日本に来てまだ3か月ですか？」、「40ヵ国以上の学生さんがいるなんて、知りませんでした」という感想を頂き、地域との距離もしっかり近づきました。
今後も『東洋言語学院がここにあって良かった！』と言ってもらえるような、地域に信頼される日本語学校を目指していきます。
