The “New Japanese” Born in Multinational Classrooms

At TLS, students from all over the world come together to learn Japanese. In fact, they represent more than 50 different countries and regions! A classroom where learners with diverse backgrounds study side by side is more than just a place to acquire language skills—it’s a space where “living Japanese” grows as students interact and exchange values. This unique environment gives rise to new ways of using Japanese every single day.



When students from diverse backgrounds come together, the classroom itself becomes a vibrant space for international exchange. When students share the same native language, they tend to fall back on it during conversations. However, at TLS, we intentionally form groups with students who speak different mother tongues, making Japanese the common language within the group. This encourages students to naturally challenge themselves to speak Japanese and develop the ability to communicate in a way that truly conveys their meaning. Moreover, encountering different perspectives allows students to discover expressions and ideas they might never have thought of on their own—a major attraction of this environment. Such experiences stimulate learning and support each student’s growth.

In actual classes, students often explain concepts using examples from their own cultures or rephrase their opinions to match each other’s Japanese proficiency. These interactions create opportunities to practice “real-world Japanese” that cannot be learned from textbooks alone. Additionally, we teach techniques that help students engage in respectful and considerate dialogue, which naturally fosters polite and thoughtful Japanese expressions. This accumulation of exchanges shapes the unique experience of learning “new Japanese” at TLS.



TLSには、世界のさまざまな地域から学生が集まり、日本語を学んでいます。その国と地域の数は、なんと50を超えています！！多様なバックグラウンドをもつ学生が同じ教室で学ぶ環境は、単に言語を習得する場にとどまらず、互いの価値観に触れながら“生きた日本語”を育てていく学びの場所です。この環境だからこそ見られる、日本語の新しい使われ方が日々生まれています。

多様なバックグラウンドをもつ学生が集まると、授業そのものが豊かな国際交流の場になります。同じ出身地の学生が集まると、どうしてもその母語で話をしてしまいがちです。しかし、TLSなら、あえて母語が違う学生同士でグループを作ることができるので、グループの共通言語が日本語になります。そうすると、自然と日本語で話すことにチャレンジでき、「相手に伝わる日本語」を意識して話す力が育ちます。また、多様な視点が交わることで、自分では思いつかなかった表現や考え方に触れられるのも大きな魅力です。こうした環境は、日本語を学ぶうえでの刺激となり、学生一人ひとりの成長を後押しします。


実際に授業内では、学生が自らの出身地の文化を例に出しながら説明したり、自分の意見を互いの日本語レベルに合わせて言い換えたりと、教科書だけでは学べない「実践的な日本語」のやり取りが生まれています。さらに、学生一人ひとりがお互いを尊重しながら対話を進められるようなテクニックを授業で伝えるので、自然と丁寧で配慮ある日本語表現が身につきます。このような交流の積み重ねが、TLSならではの“新しい日本語”の学びを形づくっています。
