The Last Class Created Together with the Students

This may be out of the blue, but do you know which season is the most beautiful in Japan?
It is…“right now”!
If you look for current pictures of Japan on Instagram, you’ll find lots of Japanese landscapes that have turned pink with cherry blossoms. Toyo Language School is located in Tokyo’s Edogawa ward, where there is a lot of nature, so students are surrounded by cherry blossoms every day.
When it comes to spring in Japan, it’s the season when new life begins. At Toyo Language School, we recently held a graduation ceremony for students who are starting new journeys in April. The graduation ceremony at Toyo Language School is more than just a ceremony. The theme of the ceremony was, “The last class created together with the students.”
By the way, the usual classes at the Toyo Language School are like this:

○ Teacher ↔ Students
A class is not complete if the teacher only speaks one-sidedly. The students are the main focus, and classes at Toyo Language School are created together by students and teachers.
On the day of the graduation ceremony, students gathered in a solemn atmosphere with a slightly nervous look on their faces. But once the ceremony began, the teacher asked, “Which age group makes up the largest portion of the population in Japan?” Suddenly, it turned into a pop quiz!
The students have been immersed in Japanese life since they arrived in Japan. You could hear them whispering things like, “Japan is an aging society with a low birthrate” and, “But it’s not 60s, right?”
Before we knew it, the tension had dissipated and the atmosphere was back to that of a normal classroom.
The answer to the quiz was: 40s.
The average age of the students gathered here is 25.9 years old. So the people they will be communicating with in Japanese will likely be a different age than them.
Throughout their time in Japan, students have had many opportunities to meet people with different backgrounds from their own. And in class, they’ve been thinking about how to communicate effectively in such situations.
Looking at the various opportunities and expanded perspectives our students have encountered, their way of thinking and communication skills have grown a lot without them even realizing it.
As you may have noticed, this quiz wasn’t just a quiz. When answering the questions, students noticed more and more how they have changed and what they’ve become able to do after living in Japan.
It’s not just their Japanese language skills that have changed.
“I used to be very shy, but now I have friends from 10 countries!”
“I’ve learnt not to be ashamed to ask questions when I don’t understand something.”
“I’ve experienced the biggest setback in my life. But I realized that even when things go wrong, I can manage.”
These are all words from graduates, who all spoke with such wonderful expressions.
By diving into a new environment, you may realize a different side of yourself than before. Of course, there will be plenty of anxiety, but with students speaking positively like this, their future is sure to blossom beautifully.

それは…「今」です！

桜でピンク色に色づいた日本の景色が沢山出てきます。
東洋言語学院がある東京の江戸川区は自然が沢山ある環境なので、
学生達も毎日桜に囲まれながら生活しています。
そして、日本の春と言えば、新しい生活がスタートする季節です。
東洋言語学院でも、4月から新しいフィールドへ旅立っていく学生達に向けて
「卒業式」を行いました。
東洋言語学院の卒業式は、単なるセレモニーではありません。
テーマは、「学生と一緒に作る最後の授業」
ちなみに、東洋言語学院のいつもの授業って、こんなイメージです。

○ 先生↔学生
授業は先生が一方的に話すだけでは完成しません。
主役は学生のみなさん、学生と先生が一緒に作るのが東洋言語学院流の授業なんです。
卒業式当日、厳かな雰囲気の中、少し緊張した面持ちで集まってきた学生達。
でも、式が始まると、先生が一言…「日本で一番人口が多い年代は？」
なんと、いきなりクイズが始まりました！
日本に来てから日本の生活にどっぷりつかってきた学生達。
「日本は少子高齢社会だからー」
「でも60代じゃないよね？」
ぼそぼそ声が聞こえてきます…
いつのまにか緊張も吹き飛んでいつもの教室の雰囲気に。
クイズの答えは、『40代』。
そして、ここに集まっている学生達の平均年齢は25.9歳。
つまり、これから日本語でコミュニケーションを取る相手は
自分とは違う年代の人が多そうですね。
これまで日本で過ごした日々の中で、学生達には
たくさんの自分とは違う背景の人たちと出会う機会がありました。
そして、授業の中では、そういう場面でどうしたら
良いコミュニケーションが取れるのかを考えてきました。
そのたくさんの機会やそこで広がった視野を一緒に確認していきます。
気が付かないうちに考え方もコミュニケーションスキルも大きく成長していました。
そう、お気づきの通り、このクイズ、ただのクイズではありません。
クイズに答えていくうちに、日本での生活を経て変化した自分や
できるようになったことにどんどん気が付いていきます。
変化したのは日本語の力だけではありません。
「すごく人見知りだったのに、今では10か国の友達がいます！」
「分からないことを聞くのも恥ずかしくないと思えるようになりました。」
「人生最大に落ち込む経験もしました。
でも、落ち込んでも何とかなるって気づきました。」
これ、全部卒業生の言葉です。
みんな、すごくいい顔で語ってくれました。
新しい環境に飛び込んでみることで、今までと違う自分に気づくことがあります。
もちろん不安もたくさんあると思います。
でも、こんないい顔で前向きな言葉を語ってくれる学生達の未来は
きっときれいに色づいて行くはずです。
